The Art Crawl is a self-guided
tour of over 170 (almost 200 in Fall 2001) artists' studios in
the downtown neighborhood. Local restaurants, coffeehouses and
galleries will also befor visitors. Families and art lovers
alike are invited to view a wide variety of art media, techniques
and working spaces. Photography, printmaking, textile arts, painting,
bookbinding, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, and computer arts are
just a few of the mediums. Various art organizations will also
beto visitors. Artists will be available to talk to visitors
and answer questions about their art and about St. Paul. Art will
be available for purchase.
Visitors are encouraged
to invite a few friends and family (children are always welcome!)
to come along to the Crawl. Visitors can have a bite to eat at
a restaurant, such as Sawatdee, Keys or Christo's... or
the local coffeehouses, Black Dog, or 10th Street Coffeehouse.
Performances are always a big draw, with scheduled music, dance,
theater, film, and, always, surprise impromptu music and events
that add excitement and variety to each Crawl.
The Art Crawl is free,
andto all. There is transportation available to carry visitors
to the various warehouses, and expanded parking areas.
The residents of the area
have built a thriving, dynamic community in Lowertown, which has
expanded into Downtown St. Paul. Over the last 20 years, they
have poured blood, sweat and love into the old warehouses of the
historic districts of St. Paul and made the neighborhoods into
a unique artists community, unparalleled in the Twin Cities,
and in the Midwest. The residents hope that everyone takes this
opportunity to visit and tour their neighborhoods and the rest
of the buildings in downtown, and experience the hidden
vitality of St. Paul.
